The Bakken oil boom hit North Dakota at precisely the time the rest of the country was suffering through an economic recession.
People from all corners of the nation packed up what they could, and traveled north, seeking opportunity — any opportunity.
After the boom, the Bakken still produces more than a million barrels of oil a day.
However, many jobs dried up with the price collapse.
Population numbers have dropped, a statistic that can be tracked with an untrained eye on any highway in western North Dakota.
But our small towns are a bit bigger than before the oil rush began.
