  • Anglers net cash for Mule DeerJuly 29, 2016

The name of the game may be fishing, but when 195 anglers hit Lake Sakakawea for the 4th Annual Energy of North Dakota Fishing Derby on July 20, the beneficiaries were Mule Deer.

The charity derby helped raise more than $13,000 for organizations dedicated to preserving habitat and conservation projects in western North Dakota, including the Friends of Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota Game and Fish and the Mule Deer Foundation.

A majority of the proceeds will go to the MDF to help the Richards Ranch Project, a 22,000-acre area north of Beach, ND that will be rehabilitated and put into the PLOTS program for 10 years. This is the largest project of its kind in the program’s history and brought together a diverse group of organizations to support it, including the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Pheasants Forever, Wild Turkey Federation, Bobcat Doosan, JMAC, XTO Energy, Hess Corporation, and the North Dakota Petroleum Council. It’s kind of a big deal to hundreds of avid sportsmen, so learn more about the project and how you can help here.

14 anglers earn prove their fishing stories are true (sometimes anyway)
Mule Deer weren’t the only winners. Five teams did net enough walleyes to bring home a small prize and bragging rights. Congratulations to our placing teams:
