  • North Dakota’s big oil boom in a man’s landAugust 28, 2015

Henrietta Norton and Dan Dennison from the Guardian traveled to Williston and Watford City to see the boom for themselves. Expecting the “Wild West” or frontier towns because of the way the area is so commonly portrayed, they found instead a place “much more subtle and complex.”

“I’ve been surprised by the positivity individuals have expressed, and the desire to take control of their lives through hard work,” they concluded.

“North Dakota is not an easy place to reach by land or air, and yet people have been making the journey here since the early 1900s, in search of opportunity and better lives.
