    hey are one of the few oil companies who can say they’ve laid no one off during the downturn, and they have no plans to do so over the next two to three years, despite the low oil price environment. They can also now lay claim to a brick and mortar office in the Williston Basin — one that is so nice, it has to be the envy of most any other field office in the Bakken.

    SM Energy is their name, and they’ve been in Williston since 2008. They started here with six to eight employees and these days boast 105.

    Though not one of the larger names in oil, the company itself was founded in 1908, headquartered in Denver with regional offices in Billings, Houston and Midland, Texas.

    In the Bakken, SM has satellite offices in Divide, Watford City, Sidney and Belfield, but Williston is home to the Bakken HQ.
